Wow, that’s awesome! Active-duty military personnel can now get discounted fares on both the LIRR and Metro-North. On the LIRR, they’ll always pay off-peak fare, and on Metro-North they’ll get 25% off the one-way station fare. Plus, their ticket will be valid for 60 days from purchase - so they can travel peak or off-peak during that time. Sweet deal!
Eligibility: Active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including National Guard and Reserve personnel, are eligible for free travel on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).
Identification Requirements: To receive free travel on the LIRR, military personnel must present a valid military ID card at the ticket window or ticket vending machine when purchasing tickets.
Travel Benefits: Military personnel can receive up to two free one-way tickets per day for themselves and their dependents when traveling on the LIRR within New York State.
Restrictions: Free travel is not available for trips outside of New York State or to special events such as sporting events or concerts that require an additional fare supplement to be purchased in advance of boarding the train.
