Wow, that’s a lot of copper! Chile was the top producer last year, producing over 5.6 thousand tonnes - a 1.7% drop from the year before. Peru, China, Congo and the US weren’t far behind though; together they made up almost 60% of global production in 2021.
Chile: Chile is the world’s largest producer of copper, producing 5.8 million metric tons in 2019. It has some of the world’s largest copper reserves and is home to many of the world’s biggest copper mines, including Escondida and Chuquicamata.
Peru: Peru is the second-largest producer of copper in the world, producing 2.4 million metric tons in 2019. The country has a long history of mining and produces a variety of metals, including gold, silver, zinc and lead as well as copper.
China: China is the third-largest producer of copper in the world with 1.7 million metric tons produced in 2019. The country has a large number of small-scale mines that produce a significant amount of its total output each year but also relies on imports to meet its demand for refined metal products such as wire and cable products for electrical applications
United States: The United States produces 1 million metric tons annually making it one of the top 10 producers globally with Arizona being one if its main production centers due to its large deposits located there
